A key overseer of the Swiss bank was decorated by the British monarch, as he emerges as the government's top candidate to run the U.K.'s national healthcare system.

Richard Meddings was made a Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth in her annual New Year's honors list. The 63-year-old Brit, who has emerged as a linchpin of Credit Suisse's recovery efforts, was lauded «for services to the financial sector.»

Currently in the running for the top job at the publicly-funded NHS, Meddings is the second Credit Suisse director to enjoy royal honors: António Horta-Osório was knighted last year both for services to finance as well as to mental healthcare and to culture.

Linchpin At Credit Suisse

Impeccably connected in British finance, Meddings has been hands-on in the wake of the Greensill as well as Archegos disasters: he chairs Credit Suisse's audit committee and sits on three others (risk, sustainability advisory, governance and nominations, conduct and financial crime control).

He stepped in temporarily as chairman of its risk committee in April, when it became clear that the incumbent wouldn't win reelection. Before, Meddings chaired TSB, a British retail bank owned by Banca Sabadell, for three years. He also sits on the board of HM Treasury in the U.K.
